Tulum Side Trips

posted as: destination details and activities

You've already heard from previously featured jauntsetter Kelly about her favorite meal in Tulum and her cabana hotel of choice. Now, she brings us short trip suggestions - one from Cancun, and one from Tulum

If you're only in Tulum for a short while, these trips probably won't make it into your schedule; but if, like Kelly, you have ample time to drive through Mexico, consider taking a day detour to either Isla Mujeres or Valladolid - or both!

Cancun Day Trip

Says Kelly: "Since you'll probably be going through Cancun at some point, a nice day trip is Isla Mujeres. You can take the ferry to this cute little island. It's very small, so you won't want to stay here more than a day or two. The seafood is amazing (order a whole Grouper if you can) and there are a few little stores that sell handmade batik goods. I actually spent a night on the island at Na Balam, which was okay, but not very authentic. You could probably find better."

We looked into other hotel options and our best find is B&B Villa La Bella. With rates from $110 to $230 (depending on the room & season), this beach side spot is very affordable - especially considering there's a pool and wireless, breakfast is included, and some of the rooms have air-conditioning. Plus, each room comes with an ocean view, king-size bed, ceiling fan, and - quirkily - a vertical shower with a real conch shell showerhead!

This island is only 15 minutes by ferry from Cancun, and we think it sounds like a great way to kill some time if you've got a free day in the area before your flight back to New York.

Quick Trip from Tulum

If you feel like exploring other towns besides Tulum, Kelly recommends Valladolid. "It's a mid-sized city between Tulum and Merida," she explains, "and is a good place to stop for lunch. Head to the zocalo (main square) for lots of shops and food vendors."

This is also a nice place to go for a snack on your way to the Chichen Itza ruins. Look for street-side flan, or for a sit-down meal, head to Hotel el Meson de Marques right next to the zocalo and food court. Their restaurant has courtyard seating and authentic Yucatan food for a good price. Try the Conchita Pibil (Mayak pork dish) or the Chicken Kol Pak (Mayan corn soup with chicken). And enjoy!

If you are in the Cancun area and want to get away from the craziness, go to Isla Mujeres. We were here for five days and it was wonderful. Also a must is a visit to Isla Contoy — go with Captain Tony (http://www.isla-mujeres.net/capttony/home.htm), his trip includes snorkeling stops in between Isla Mujeres and Isla Contoi, and freshly made lunch on Isla Contoy.
