Looking nice when traveling is no easy feat: between figuring out the best way to get to the airport to making sure you haven't left your passport behind, there are an overwhelming number of small but important details to keep you occupied before hitting the road. Worrying about our appearance is often the last thing on our minds when we're rushing to catch a flight. This sentiment is particularly true in today's current travel atmosphere, when travel industry folks are overworked and customers are all too happy to forfeit any sense of decorum or cheer in the name of surly comfort. After all, who isn't at least a little bit cynical as soon as they step into an airport? Chances are, your flight is overbooked, delayed or cancelled - and don't get us started on checked-baggage fees. So sue us if we're in jeans with a frown on our face - most of us feel we've earned the right to act, and look, slightly disheveled!
Still, as many jauntsetters have noted, the simple possession of a positive attitude can go a long way in how you're treated in transit. From Eliza's "be kind to everyone in an airport" philosophy to Dodai's joie de vivre, the benefits of trying to rise above the frustrations of modern day travel are both contagious and tangible - Dodai, in fact, scored multiple bottles of champagne on a recent flight thanks to her good humor alone. We'll say Cheers to that!
And while dressing up in your finest duds won't necessarily score you an upgrade on a flight like it might have for Kelly (see her story here), donning an outfit that's a little nicer than a Juicy Couture sweatsuit can have its perks. At the very least, it should help give you the confidence to ask for an upgrade - something we think you should always, always do (see our blog post on the subject here).
Our secret strategy for looking and feeling our best when traveling? Because we have super-curly (and unmanageable) hair, if we're traveling for lots of meetings or a special occasion, we'll splurge and stop at a salon en route to the airport for an updo. That's right - and updo, which will make even jeans and flats look pulled together.
Not to sound too obsessed with Mad Men, but there's something to be said for having your hair set (and shellacked) in a fashion that will keep you looking polished for days upon days. Just remember to cover your head in a scarf when you go to bed, and replace any time you might normally spend sweating in the gym and mussing your hair with a calming, hairdo-friendly cocktail hour.
On that note, we got our last updo just the other week, before a long weekend of meetings and affairs, at this retro-style salon on the Lower East Side. Luckily the general manager, John Hoad, agreed to extend 20% off all services to jauntsetter readers till the end of October. Even a simple blowout (which starts at $40 with the discount) with a little tease and extra hairspray can do wonders for a trip.
Whether you simply receive a compliment on your North-by-Northwest inspired dress* from a flight attendant, or an upgrade to a suite upon hotel check-in, a smile and a wardrobe-choice that says "I love traveling" can get you far.
So let us know - what's your secret to looking together and feeling positive on the road? And has an outfit or attitude gotten you an upgrade? Share with fellow jauntsetter readers below.
xo,
