Profiled jauntsetter and current Austin local Diana recently sent us her Austin tips, which we included in our Trip Pick of the Week roundup. One of her recommendations was to attend a movie at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, and the more we read about it, the more we wish there was one here in New York!

Why's that? Since we're food-obsessed (to put it mildly), let's start with the snacks: there are the usual suspects (like popcorn - served with real butter) as well as an extensive menu of restaurant fare (cheese plates, spicy bleu burger, goat cheese salad, and creme brulees).

Then there's the booze - it is the Alamo Drafthouse after all. Each one of the four locations carries beer, wine, and champagne, and the downtown venue - nicknamed the Ritz after the big nearby sign - even serves cocktails, including signature drinks like the Alamojito.

And, lest you be worried that you'll miss the movie when you order, the folks at the Alamo have made sure to take care of the practical side of things: they've come up with a special system that lets you order from the comfort of your chair, without missing any of the film you're watching.

Finally, the Alamo's got amazing-sounding events - and so many of them. Feel like watching a music flick? Then head over to the Alamo for Music Mondays. Or is horror more your style? Alamo has that covered too: check out Terror Thursdays for "some good old-fashioned slash, smash, trash and thrash (all for zero cash)." (It's free!)

Then there's Weird Wednesdays (also free), Singalong Extravaganzas, Quote-Alongs, Food Film Events, Master Pancake Theatre (bad movies paired with live comedy), and the list goes on.

We especially like the sound of Open Screen night, their open mic for movies: "You bring in a tape or a DVD, and then we all watch it together on the big screen" - whether it's a movie you made when you were 8 or your thesis film, anything goes.

For a schedule of events and movies, the menus, and a list of locations (Diana recommends the South Lamar and Ritz ones), check out their site. And if you've been there, or have any other don't-miss Austin activities, leave a comment below and tell us about it!

xoxo

your jauntsetter team
