When I was in college my mom and I went to a spa together in Israel, on the Dead Sea. I was sort of a sullen teenager so I probably didn't appreciate it as much as I should have, but it was amazing. We had massages and mud wraps and ate delicious food - there were just enough activities to keep us entertained but not so many that we felt like we were on a Carnival Cruise.
There were a couple mother-daughter pairs on my Bikini Boot Camp trip, so I can imagine if your mom is fitness-minded and doesn't mind slightly rustic accommodations, that would be a good option.
Another trip I can recommend with mom is going to wine country in either the North Fork on LI or Napa/Sonoma and doing some tastings. There's something about drinking with mom that is a sort of unique bonding experience I think! It makes you feel like you've really become an adult. Of course, it helps to have a designated driver (dad?). My mom doesn't live in New York, so I've also done NYC "staycations" with her where I'll get us a hotel room on Priceline and we'll get facials, go to a play, eat out, etc.
Another great mom trip: Miami or Fort Lauderdale. It's super cheap and quick to get there, and you can go for a weekend, hang out on the beach, and hit the crazy-amazing, huge outlet mall, Sawgrass Mills, in Fort Lauderdale. Their Neiman's and Saks outlets are especially good and not at all picked over, and there's also Barneys, Lululemon, Theory, and a ton of others.

Great article. I just wanted to tell a couple of words about hotel I learned in the article found by torrent SE and later checked on my own experience. If you have a large family or are traveling with grandparents, and normally have to get two hotel rooms, it can actually save you money to get their 2-bedroom suite. Plus it gives you a separate room for early bedtimes or naptimes.
Be sure to ask at the hotel if they have any balls or play items. Many of the Residence Inns have those available, and I would think other family-friendly places might as well. When I travel with my grandkids, I like to pack a soft flying saucer (like Frisbees only for the water). Then we have something fun to do outside that won’t break any windows :)
If you are flying this summer and you normally use the blankets and pillows on the plane, be aware that at least some airlines have removed them do to swine flu precautions. Even though it’s summer, it can be chilly in the later evening on a plane, especially for kids and grandkids :) You might want to take some of your own along.

So you want a holiday in Jamaica, but are afraid that their children are bored all the time you are there. Every mother knows what children are capable of being bored: and if you do not know yet, vacation is no time to find out. You may love art, but I guarantee you do not want to be surrounded by beautiful child ‘art’ on the walls of his hotel room, or worse still be responsible for cleaning the walls. Fortunately, the boredom of their children will not be a problem if they are watching cartoons on lcd tv stands that will have to deal with in Jamaica. Jamaica may be chosen by the sun and the sea, but their children will ask to go back for all the excitement and fun that the island offers.
