Dream getaway: India! I'd start in Mumbai, fly to Goa, then make my way up through Kerala for a month or so. Then I'd hit Amritsar and spend a day at the Golden Temple. Not that I've thought about this obsessively or anything.
Worst travel experience: Anything involving Penn Station.
Biggest overall travel tip: Enjoy experiences as they come. Terrible travel encounters will be amazing stories later on.
Exceptions you make when you travel: I'm pretty rigid about my drinking at home - a couple martinis on Fridays, a glass of wine here or there. And I never smoke. Until I set foot in Europe, where after two days vodka and nicotine are seeping out of my pores.
Favorite short jaunt: Rhinebeck, New York is and always has been a charming and relaxing town - it has the river, beautiful scenery, and great BBQ. The Beekman Arms makes a big to-do about its being the oldest inn in the country, but it really is lovely. Pete's Tavern in town is a great local place to eat - try the skirt steak.
One place everyone should go: The Dalmatian Coast. Croatia is just stunning. I will never forget standing on the wall in Dubrovnik. And it's still 1/4 of the cost of the French or Italian coasts. Go in late August - it's empty, all the summer kids are gone. Visit Hvar for at least two nights, you can take the ferry there and just head to the tourist office to rent a sea-view apartment for around $30 a night. And be sure to eat the grilled fish - they catch it in front of you, skin and grill it, then hand it to you with lemon wedges. Sigh.
Best solo getaway: Paris! Where else?
Best post-breakup trip: See previous answer.
Recommended travel accessory: I love those inflatable pillows that have the compact fuzzy blankets inside - you can easily store them in a suitcase, and they can really help you sleep on planes. Something about having your own pillow is very soothing.
Good book for a trip: I read Vanity Fair on a train through Eastern Europe. It certainly gave me something to look at other than sheep. The train ride from the Czech Republic to Hungary isn't filled with the most astounding scenery - it's the perfect setting to read a period drama.
Favorite guidebooks: I rarely go to a foreign city without a Lonely Planet; they really are the best guides. Frommer's is great too - I once interviewed Arthur Frommer, he's a lovely man.
Ever used a travel agent? Yes, I have: it's called The Internet and it's wondrous.
Meal you would travel for: Everything at the Takeshimaya Mall Food Court in Singapore (yes, I said the mall food court - doubt not until you've eaten there. It is astounding.) The place is a wonderland of stalls, all serving a different incredible dish. Ask anyone who's traveled to Singapore, and they'll say "The best thing about it is the food." And when that many people have the same opinion, it's usually correct. It's this incredible blend of Indian and Malaysian and every sort of Southeast Asian cuisine, with its own unique touches. And the national dish is Chicken Rice - which is basically chicken and rice. And it is the best thing you've ever eaten.
Unusual souvenir: I tried to bring a bottle of snake wine back from Vietnam - they take a live snake, put it in a clear bottle, suffocate it, then fill the bottle with alcohol and let it sit. It is one of the most vile liquids ever imbibed. And it looks amazing - there's a dead snake staring out at you from inside the bottle. Unfortunately I forgot to check it, and Hong Kong airport security was having none of me taking it in my carryon.
Preferred airline: JetBlue for domestic; I watch the Travel Channel the entire flight.
Packing tip: Never check luggage. Wear 4 pairs of underwear on the plane if you have to.
Tips for dealing with jetlag: Be in the time zone where you are. If you're flying to London, when you get off the plane it is no longer New York time. New York time doesn't exist - there is only London time. Set your watch right away, and don't think about "what time it would be if you were in New York." You're not in New York, so what does it matter?
